I've got a total of 5 warps and about 10 yards of cloth to my name, but I'm hooked. I've resisted weaving in the same way that I resisted knitting for so many years. I really did NOT need another needle thing in my bag of tricks to distract me. I have a friend in heaven--a very accomplished weaver--who prophesied this years ago and I know he's laughing now. I'm not entirely sure that my resistance was the wisest course. But to everything there is a season, and perhaps this season (my 61st if you count by years) is the one. I'm now a passionate knitter and this weaving thing... I can't get over how quickly color and pattern develop as the shuttle flies back and forth and how much there is to learn.</p><p>All that being so, I am, as I said, a new weaver. With that comes a whole host of challenges--tension problems, unintended floats, and wonky selvedges, which are the left and right sides of the cloth that should be straight and neat but only become so with practice and mastery. The photo above is an example of a wonky selvage indeed. </p><p>I'm working on a project that incorporates lengths of handwoven cloth, and as I prepared to join those pieces to make a larger whole I realized that those wonky edges posed a problem. I could cut them straight, but even to the untrained eye that waviness of the warp threads close to the edges would be obvious. Or, I could cut farther into the width of the cloth, sacrificing something like 25% of the total width to get to a straight edge that lined up with straight warp threads. Or, I could look at my bouncing baby cloth and love it for who and what it is--early work by a student--and honor the naivete of the line formed by that wonky edge.</p><p>That's what I'm doing. I'm following the natural edge of the cloth, finishing it, and even accentuating it with additional stitch. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirHrWM4QQONBkd4WqnOeYHD6hKz_mIA3zmEFMdeL_s0o8jIGAnwlkw5vwfzcwwXKqsw-m99_B9IM2nXl_7ujDxBfKDp5Ip_3juAG2DuegteV9eOD3xGhVQzkUz-BL1-CPFPP41nodVGDmltxDuBpFZvkPhLRTeajPv6qXLOdZ5TbC7fk7vI5-swTF0cn0/s4032/weaving-3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirHrWM4QQONBkd4WqnOeYHD6hKz_mIA3zmEFMdeL_s0o8jIGAnwlkw5vwfzcwwXKqsw-m99_B9IM2nXl_7ujDxBfKDp5Ip_3juAG2DuegteV9eOD3xGhVQzkUz-BL1-CPFPP41nodVGDmltxDuBpFZvkPhLRTeajPv6qXLOdZ5TbC7fk7vI5-swTF0cn0/w300-h400/weaving-3.jpeg" width="300" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>It's an entirely innocent line and an unintended mark that has a power of its own. Bravo to our team for representing ACN so well! </p><p>We did a good job promoting the <i>Textile Talk</i> on Instagram, but, it wasn't just the posts about the <i>Textile Talk</i> that got people to our account at the end of February and beginning of March. Maria Billings created five posts about the <span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">upcoming <i>Unfolding</i> exhibition at the Sierra Arts Foundation in Reno, NV, April 3-29, 2024 so people who came to our IG could see current activity. Each of her posts features a photo and short blurb about one of the artists in the show. We got a lot of response to this. Maria is continuing to feature work in <i>Unfolding</i>.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><b>I invite anyone on Instagram to re-post the posts about <i>Unfolding</i> at the Sierra Arts Foundation from the ACN profile between now and the end of the show on April 29. </b>You can do it from your account--you don't need to be logged into the ACN account. Take advantage of the content being ready-made and share each of the posts at least once to your followers inviting them to attend the show or at least follow our account.</span><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"> <br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Let's see how many people we can get to follow us on IG. </span><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">We currently have 917 followers. Can you help us reach 1000???</span></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Thanks. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhydJbMAwptxTbjCVKxaRlF11SA1qEdtJyDcai3Ey7PfqK_y6UUq8-ix3mS4PI4yMDY1SZLjwt-eMu0wTlY0KbNRYd9Xvg4DuIML93brfBOZ-mb7RHD1eYWZ6VkU3Y2EPre3gkL6CRgoBPxHdtDL_ljZqkRGNVzE6Y2iuVn4XJJ74aVz-h_9KPWYuWvgRfO/s1615/ACN%20Share%20to%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1615" data-original-width="1615" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhydJbMAwptxTbjCVKxaRlF11SA1qEdtJyDcai3Ey7PfqK_y6UUq8-ix3mS4PI4yMDY1SZLjwt-eMu0wTlY0KbNRYd9Xvg4DuIML93brfBOZ-mb7RHD1eYWZ6VkU3Y2EPre3gkL6CRgoBPxHdtDL_ljZqkRGNVzE6Y2iuVn4XJJ74aVz-h_9KPWYuWvgRfO/s320/ACN%20Share%20to%201.jpg" width="320" /><img border="0" data-original-height="1615" data-original-width="1615" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg97oRypek3tyMnHqj9kU6opU7JxQmGjP0uaLB4JcXfUJ-XIqeqmJMBwR504sSzdZ-nLCh_rX-6Jv6tubvYERmBnHxDmTVwF5ZaQWHt7BGzjXS-no4PrF4cMVVxwAIn8I_t1U3xx75b29PyFomF7jypFl4qUTnIdDICTA-_H8dhy7F-vUeairQnd5_Q8KnV/s320/ACN%20Share%20to%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYqoMkdzyht07rmBaT4ArK36lgVLvevOmBvQ5BIaAKLC56-U8nNasm5j89Ss_N3YEUA9Ze5fTYtmGjoWwBX7jzB9uBM29TqDfkgOpXlzm7mU_0fstqzurk3B_JeXAB2dI_LMeTja-LesP2bFkPn8EEkIYzum48sf1cc2ZKuZBDfOHVbts6Rd_-nPORnTRi/s1615/ACN%20AddToStory%201.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1615" data-original-width="1615" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYqoMkdzyht07rmBaT4ArK36lgVLvevOmBvQ5BIaAKLC56-U8nNasm5j89Ss_N3YEUA9Ze5fTYtmGjoWwBX7jzB9uBM29TqDfkgOpXlzm7mU_0fstqzurk3B_JeXAB2dI_LMeTja-LesP2bFkPn8EEkIYzum48sf1cc2ZKuZBDfOHVbts6Rd_-nPORnTRi/s320/ACN%20AddToStory%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div></span><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><br /> </span><p></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"> </span><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhydJbMAwptxTbjCVKxaRlF11SA1qEdtJyDcai3Ey7PfqK_y6UUq8-ix3mS4PI4yMDY1SZLjwt-eMu0wTlY0KbNRYd9Xvg4DuIML93brfBOZ-mb7RHD1eYWZ6VkU3Y2EPre3gkL6CRgoBPxHdtDL_ljZqkRGNVzE6Y2iuVn4XJJ74aVz-h_9KPWYuWvgRfO/s1615/ACN%20Share%20to%201.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div><p></p>kathleenchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10620945246431301136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3083737055164149220.post-58951279775712964772024-03-09T10:00:00.004-05:002024-03-09T10:00:00.149-05:00Our latest interview has dropped! Friends donated rusty objects and I even found a nearby source of scrap non-galvanized steel sheetings sold by the pound that helped me with my homework! Some family health issues sprang up so things have been delayed a bit. I've managed to complete all class work related to Rusts and Tannins. I will tackle the natural Indigo portion in March in which we'll be asked to overdye many of the peices from this portion of the class. The instruction was thorough and well presented and the Facebook sharing with classmates was informative and fun. The beautifully subtle colors and the steam punk style textures have been mesmerizing. Highly recommended!</span></p><p><span style="text-align: center;">Here are some terrific samples from the junkyard that were too big and heavy to take home.</span></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiL7vk_xu4vmxN_4w651awQcw6IfMsRX0NhZ3i5MEQ2mfpHAh1c9QQVg1OrPpmGaeA2cOyOHR02us8IxtjcsbW9FKYhqrMfGI-Rnm2_xEcnfD0KklbmKZLqSnDryGMwvjul53Xl1mMhBp1bE4YjfEhR6cejHqOcyZi3Qpi-jXKJ-HoOOmZj3jdEjeM8jqaM" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiL7vk_xu4vmxN_4w651awQcw6IfMsRX0NhZ3i5MEQ2mfpHAh1c9QQVg1OrPpmGaeA2cOyOHR02us8IxtjcsbW9FKYhqrMfGI-Rnm2_xEcnfD0KklbmKZLqSnDryGMwvjul53Xl1mMhBp1bE4YjfEhR6cejHqOcyZi3Qpi-jXKJ-HoOOmZj3jdEjeM8jqaM" width="180" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgD9QMrQF1N6RBQIRNE4WqO67IM0VxtCPwtaypFrQyZhzM4R7fIHhU_Pr8rQyK3vTqiFVhdIl97kBcKJVk6ST3S4HYII6t9u9WSwHCoGtZXKHlTAx799uoRzDTz4ezTyGfQYFqoVnld57epvyRyD4JfMvBBekpM3oFpTJhyBmC2vKMjsvAbM7xY8AD9IA_-" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgD9QMrQF1N6RBQIRNE4WqO67IM0VxtCPwtaypFrQyZhzM4R7fIHhU_Pr8rQyK3vTqiFVhdIl97kBcKJVk6ST3S4HYII6t9u9WSwHCoGtZXKHlTAx799uoRzDTz4ezTyGfQYFqoVnld57epvyRyD4JfMvBBekpM3oFpTJhyBmC2vKMjsvAbM7xY8AD9IA_-" width="180" /></a></div><p></p><p>I did manage to buy one of the nicely rusted barrel lids. We used Black Tea, Pomegranate and Myrobalan, the last two products having been provided in the class kit from Maiwa. When Black tea combines with ferrous oxide in the rust it produces a very dark grey, almost black color as well as many intermediary tones and hues. The Myrobalan has a more pink cast to the grey and the Pomegranate produces a pale grey. I tell myself that it is important to have a variety of threads because I work with so many different types of fabric and techniques. I NEED to have wool, linen, cotton, silk, chenille, rayon and mylar threads all in solid and variegated combinations for both machine and hand work. Not to be forgotten, but threads come in different weights. Maybe I will need a #3 or #5 or #8 or #12 or #50 or #60, #100 weight of thread so I should buy one of each. Right? </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJwSDfFYgwF4y5VhlpqVEfC6BB7rjvgWJehbRSdA6lZGggT-0d6qUSjLDgeE0ze8mwydclHrAqDR37f-XywoaAjiktNkJ9MHIa7HxUMgzmoZyTjRCH6Sfkoa_tPaU49K8Ca1IJa-cvS7t6_VaHJDRFicmYr57V-c79Po7WRdv3uLllbUkNcPvQVF-dPD0/s4032/IMG_4625.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJwSDfFYgwF4y5VhlpqVEfC6BB7rjvgWJehbRSdA6lZGggT-0d6qUSjLDgeE0ze8mwydclHrAqDR37f-XywoaAjiktNkJ9MHIa7HxUMgzmoZyTjRCH6Sfkoa_tPaU49K8Ca1IJa-cvS7t6_VaHJDRFicmYr57V-c79Po7WRdv3uLllbUkNcPvQVF-dPD0/w254-h320/IMG_4625.jpeg" width="254" /></a></div><p></p><p><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> </span><span> A plethora of threads.</span><br /></p><p>Keep in mind the photos I am about to share with you are a mere glimpse into my thread mania (I wouldn't want to overwhelm you). And since I love colour I should probably do a few variegated skeins because they are just fun and they might be just the one combination that is perfect for that yet to be thought of masterpiece. And maybe I have a friend that might need a certain colour so I should probably dye two of each combination just incase. And I should probably do the entire colour wheel of each weight of thread. <div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Have you ever had a day that you remember everything in vivid detail? Sometimes they are momentous occasions like weddings, graduations or funerals. Then there are some that begin as rather ordinary but turn out to be extraordinary. A time when you are truly living in the moment, when you can recall what the air smelled like, the call of birds and the crunch of snow beneath your boots.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">My piece <i>Remember This Day</i> tries to capture just such a day.
I was home to help my mother after her recent operation and had made plans to go for a
walk with a friend from high school. We hadn't been really close, but she had always
been one of the most authentic people I have ever known. She had metastatic
breast cancer but today was a good day. It was November in the Northeast, so it was cold and snowy, but we walked and
talked, the past and present blurring. She wore a red hat, and I wore a purple jacket. We laughed a
lot. As time wore on, we got colder but neither of us was ready to go home. I
got a call two months later that my friend had died.</div><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I have thought about this day a lot because I was sad and missing my friend but happy that we were able to spend that day together. I wrote this haiku in response to it:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Snow falls
on our heads,<o:p></o:p></p><p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">We tell each
other stories,<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Remember
this day.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">The idea for the piece had been rolling around in my head

workshop on <a href="https://www.textileartist.org/" target="_blank">textileartist.org.</a> That formed the basis of the piece. While taking a walk with the roll of cloth and a pencil and pen I would stop at intervals and sketch what I saw in front of me.</p><p class="MsoNormal"> I kept the palette subdued to give
the November vibe, the only real pops of color the lines of red and purple to
represent our walking. Little snippets of our conversations were stamped along
the roll of fabric. I added a lot of hand stitching which allowed me to sit with the piece and contemplate my feelings as the work progressed.<o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYOzFo7v2P6r3QDeGQHRkRLNb1lcfjLn7MzaACvlCve8_w_rGlw2_oKwl_9GfwAiLrbFdcBE2bHm3E0ttTYBoSy8FhCl_3v2QuBXA06P8EuPN8ENzmKO_-Uumx6RhIhcUiAHK1mgdgUPHT_nqq7hXmO0oTDP1s_qGC6KyXfEatkYLS0klK4dXT5rGIr-E/s4000/Nailos_Remember%20%20This%20Day_Detail%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYOzFo7v2P6r3QDeGQHRkRLNb1lcfjLn7MzaACvlCve8_w_rGlw2_oKwl_9GfwAiLrbFdcBE2bHm3E0ttTYBoSy8FhCl_3v2QuBXA06P8EuPN8ENzmKO_-Uumx6RhIhcUiAHK1mgdgUPHT_nqq7hXmO0oTDP1s_qGC6KyXfEatkYLS0klK4dXT5rGIr-E/w420-h314/Nailos_Remember%20%20This%20Day_Detail%201.jpg" width="420" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuFlTwV2PG1wjK-peGQQf2iYqXTND-LSXtrjf6rZyufKcjAC98z0zjll0NAYrYbP-wuvZ1nDgXMNI-_HPmgOCorYM-3k-dSPgj7LZ21j72QzuybmDFywAFSlgUJoE5lhvFyrseZ4LIQQcWywF05HD0grqI-mLKNnl6IEqlal2eQ9dqkxQOHVqWm5Jj_gM/s4000/Nailos_Remember%20This%20Day_Detail%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuFlTwV2PG1wjK-peGQQf2iYqXTND-LSXtrjf6rZyufKcjAC98z0zjll0NAYrYbP-wuvZ1nDgXMNI-_HPmgOCorYM-3k-dSPgj7LZ21j72QzuybmDFywAFSlgUJoE5lhvFyrseZ4LIQQcWywF05HD0grqI-mLKNnl6IEqlal2eQ9dqkxQOHVqWm5Jj_gM/w421-h316/Nailos_Remember%20This%20Day_Detail%203.jpg" width="421" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6tVlEhYpgEEfPPdR0J9PLSyr8I-g1AVrx2RPl6dPN6oPb1N1n66mCLH58qV8LZS9GcChMijkLQLK8vU5Ou2sQErbV_3ZhuNV4Q9Gleb63aQGjxfDTw78TLqRhExHTSF0qbs0qCxpOChmhheKOhyI-XhHc75SD413Upqbk_DHt0xz7lOmbjD2lt9IUCJQ/s4000/Nailos_Remember%20This%20Day_Detail%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4000" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6tVlEhYpgEEfPPdR0J9PLSyr8I-g1AVrx2RPl6dPN6oPb1N1n66mCLH58qV8LZS9GcChMijkLQLK8vU5Ou2sQErbV_3ZhuNV4Q9Gleb63aQGjxfDTw78TLqRhExHTSF0qbs0qCxpOChmhheKOhyI-XhHc75SD413Upqbk_DHt0xz7lOmbjD2lt9IUCJQ/w407-h305/Nailos_Remember%20This%20Day_Detail%202.jpg" width="407" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I am pleased that this piece was accepted into Blurred Boundaries because it is deeply personal, and I think it successfully captures the day for me.<br />Mary Annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09730565046098435178noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3083737055164149220.post-37812267534407694192024-01-29T13:55:00.004-05:002024-01-29T14:01:07.862-05:00An interview with Sue Sherman...<p>Our newest interview has dropped! I've been taking photos from 2017 on in places like Santa Rosa, CA, where fire raged up to the property line of my family's home. And in Lahaina, Maui, HI, destroying one of the oldest cities in the US. There are countless more examples of these in every region on the planet. Here are the first 3 in the series - all the stitching is by hand and I painted Tyvek to add a bit of dimension to the areas that were still ablaze. Over the years I've found that I derive far more satisfaction and produce better artwork when I create pieces in a series. Doing so allows me to explore ideas and techniques more deeply. I usually have several series running at a time, and they generally span several years. I send some time looking at my <i>Outward Movement</i> series, which I've recently brought to a close. <p></p><p>You can read my thoughts about the series and see all of the <i>Outward Movement</i> pieces on my blog at:</p><p><span> </span><a href="https://russlittlefiberartist.com/blog/2024/1/1/thoughts-about-the-outward-movement-series" target="_blank">https://russlittlefiberartist.com/blog/2024/1/1/thoughts-about-the-outward-movement-series</a></p><p><br /></p><p>Russ Little<br />College Park, Maryland<br />http://russlittlefiberartist.com</p>Russ Littlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05087596343127077125noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3083737055164149220.post-80288085094791368322023-12-30T11:00:00.001-05:002023-12-30T11:00:00.129-05:00My Process for Creating a Blurred Boundaries Entry by Carol NilsenWhile thinking over the concept of boundaries blurring, I focused on spheres rubbing together because they brought to mind entities competing for space or ideas jockeying for position. I chose to work in sheer hand dyed silks, my own printed polyester sheers and linens, and assorted recycled and new commercial metallics, to be stitched to gold lame fused to wool batting which was fused with Mistyfuse to a commercial cotton backing.
Initial palette included yellow, orage, red, and blue spheres.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoW59mwKd41u9KpUVKR9aFCa5dRRvyk83oMIRC3283a9ssiKdonqsIVHHlhFvP_iDa3iE2b2-n8tOSEh87NNU713PVmODAputmWm5J6vopaQnBWPESGzzd04RtN_7cgHaFmOlvAOi6DOxXEF6LtcygDMtYhnNhEo4yBDa_j3uhlKcYbU_50aq3lDQMoGI/s4032/IMG-2216.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoW59mwKd41u9KpUVKR9aFCa5dRRvyk83oMIRC3283a9ssiKdonqsIVHHlhFvP_iDa3iE2b2-n8tOSEh87NNU713PVmODAputmWm5J6vopaQnBWPESGzzd04RtN_7cgHaFmOlvAOi6DOxXEF6LtcygDMtYhnNhEo4yBDa_j3uhlKcYbU_50aq3lDQMoGI/s320/IMG-2216.JPG"/></a></div>
After strengthening the spheres with additional sheer layers around their perimeters, I tried out a few other colors and fabrics and finally decided the blue was too dominant for the concept of blurring. Stepping away from the piece helped.

I wanted to convey motion of spheres in contact, so I cut subtly varying shades of sheers and metallic mesh into arching shapes and attached them to the design wall with pins, which gave me a chance to adjust the composition as it progressed.

After I liked the basic composition, I adjusted the pinning for sewing by removing each vertical pin from the felt design wall and repinning it in a horizontal position. This makes the temporary composition movable and ready for the sewing machine.

One of the great things about it is that both Mary Vaneccke and Joy Lavrencik also live here. Mary invited me to a meeting of the Fiber Artists of Southern Arizona, a small group of artists living in this area. They graciously asked me to join the group. It feels quite nice to be "grounded" with fellow textile artists in a brand new place. I already have work on their website and have been invited to show with them at a Tucson venue in January.</p><p>It as lovely to be welcomed.</p><p>Here a link to the FASA site.</p><p>https://www.fasa-art.com/</p><p> There is a variety of approaches to fiber art on the site. I hope you enjoy exploring! <br /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p><br /></p>Barbara J. So exciting! As you can see from the first picture, there are small circles on the floor, below the pods. These circles each encase a small pile of seeds from the monster River Birch tree that lives in my backyard. About a week into the show I got an unexpected email from the promoters. Oh dear! People are walking through the sculpture, and consequently walking the seeds throughout the building. Building management is most unhappy about this! </p></blockquote><div style="text-align: center;">The curators, with their first rate attention to any and all details that crop up were on it. Look at the most elegant, creative solution they came up with! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I told them they did me a favor. Going forward, now, somehow I will have to come up with my own risers to include with the piece, as now that I've seen it with the risers, I can't "unsee" it!! The risers created a visual boundary that has accomplished the goal of preventing traffic thru the art, and in the process, made it even better. We were there for 5 weeks in November to work on making our new house a home, came home to Illinois for a few weeks over the holidays and will return to Tucson in early January for 3 months. It is a big change (especially for me!). One of the biggest changes is that I gave up my studio in Illinois and ended up downsizing quite a bit to move things home. I felt that spending money on rent when I was not going to be there working did not make any sense. The other side of that coin is that I have a casita space (AKA the NEW studio) in Tucson. So I have been trying to figure out how to set up 2 different spaces over the past few months. Sounds decadent, doesn't it??? I feel very lucky to have the space in Tucson but it came with a price. My current home studio is a small room in the basement that I share with the plumbing, the electrical box, the second refrigerator (:-), the alarm system and not one window. I do have a second bedroom down in the lower level that is being pressed into service for a place to sit and work on computer and printer and my sewing area is making use of my desk in the other room. </p><p>The Tucson space is about the size of a one car garage, has some built in storage, a great floor, a sink, and 2 windows. I have been getting it pulled together so that when I go back in January I can begin to work.</p><p>Meanwhile, I am back in Illinois trying to work out what is worth shipping to Tucson in terms of supplies, and when does it make more sense to just order from Blick.</p><p>The other outcome on the Illinois end is that I got a U-Haul indoor storage space (10 x 15) to have a place to store all the finished art work that used to reside in that small room in the basement. THAT has been great actually. Close by, very well lighted and secured. I can go find things there easily and it is only 5 minutes away. And cost a lot less then my former studio space.</p><p>For this first 3 month time in Tucson I am going to work primarily on the online workshop that I signed up for a year ago with Claire Benn on Natural Pigments. I hope my narrowing my focus there I can work out the kinks of working in a new space.</p><p>I keep telling myself that change is GOOD, difficult in the moment but GOOD in the long run. And I truly believe that a change to an entirely new setting and environment will help my work expand in new directions. I am already collecting bits of desert "stuff". Dried cactus, wood fragments, etc. We shall see.</p><p>Stay tuned! I might write about this again in April. And maybe there will even be pictures of new work.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Barbara J. Haven't made it to the Kanta cloth collection at the PMA yet( through Jan), but I did catch Emily Richardson's amazing show at Gross Mcleaf and Bruce Hoffman's curation of Fiber Art Now's FIBER REIMAGINED at both Gravers Lane Galleries. Both shows run through October. The PMA annual Contemporary Craft show always features interesting Fibers and will run from Nov 3-5. Consider spending some of your fall in Philadelphia!</span></p><p><span face="Söhne, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji"" style="background-color: #f7f7f8; blue, yellow, or black that went into each recipe. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihZSw4Z3EgL5Hvt9ZzCzmXJ8JodrSIA7bKUBKhn_BfcWyhcUC3VDHkvAh63vlK7_kOyWGFrGieBAsQPwrrNqQVtXviyROqv84ZBqMfTPgQBaTQV-UPohZRFFlcBX6-LfT28-HVEIDAtfDYhDSKjXYMnQ1IWODldoaQN-wbMlIhjJXhXjfaihbaF-PfTrmo/s3721/20231010_221810168_iOS.heic" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3721" data-original-width="2999" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihZSw4Z3EgL5Hvt9ZzCzmXJ8JodrSIA7bKUBKhn_BfcWyhcUC3VDHkvAh63vlK7_kOyWGFrGieBAsQPwrrNqQVtXviyROqv84ZBqMfTPgQBaTQV-UPohZRFFlcBX6-LfT28-HVEIDAtfDYhDSKjXYMnQ1IWODldoaQN-wbMlIhjJXhXjfaihbaF-PfTrmo/w225-h279/20231010_221810168_iOS.heic" width="225" /></a></div> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3d-Dj7a2iHu3yStTwdy7niU7i8bgqITtV0VoaGU_KfjP63U96U3Ib1Fbl3cCsbV0SPOWSq0nEb48v0Ge0Djl4YyJOGzRRPQSCOHuF7evyTvM6eyoqM9U8ZEmGRT9fInG59DXH1oo-kIcEzNBNNREVFrXdcLAxR0MO4h6MQOz9VjA9HFLA-uEUWe4bPzdf/s3509/20231009_004807017_iOS.heic" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3509" data-original-width="3008" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3d-Dj7a2iHu3yStTwdy7niU7i8bgqITtV0VoaGU_KfjP63U96U3Ib1Fbl3cCsbV0SPOWSq0nEb48v0Ge0Djl4YyJOGzRRPQSCOHuF7evyTvM6eyoqM9U8ZEmGRT9fInG59DXH1oo-kIcEzNBNNREVFrXdcLAxR0MO4h6MQOz9VjA9HFLA-uEUWe4bPzdf/w238-h278/20231009_004807017_iOS.heic" width="238" /></a><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Don’t get me wrong, this
exercise will serve me in future work. But, I also found it became too
restrictive. Every time I started a new project, a knot would form in my
stomach. Why?! </div></span></div><p class="MsoNormal">It was sort of a mystery to me. I now know my body was telling me
this scientific approach was not serving me, that I needed to rely on my
intuitive sense of color. I was attempting to document exactness into every
project, exactly how I created every color for a particular project—so many
drops of yellow mixed with so many drops of blue and then maybe some drops of red
added in. Yeah, I’m gagging just writing this.</p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrM0aEe8vTHxMv5pjYbKE_e2yVoee0i0d8q2twQy8wKeIhw-vot7_j8crXKIq695dlawAij9oEIPkkPJ2DdOJLN5DoVXRG4Vfi2LlDpPiQ2PO-w_V8mFY_JWf8o13xQxxuqpRuS3JgKc-P3OmwT-sbDzpP3GpXluJoBYgG52h5fEeIECqAijCyc0Yv6FGq/s2477/20230905_172745935_iOS.heic" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2477" data-original-width="1806" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrM0aEe8vTHxMv5pjYbKE_e2yVoee0i0d8q2twQy8wKeIhw-vot7_j8crXKIq695dlawAij9oEIPkkPJ2DdOJLN5DoVXRG4Vfi2LlDpPiQ2PO-w_V8mFY_JWf8o13xQxxuqpRuS3JgKc-P3OmwT-sbDzpP3GpXluJoBYgG52h5fEeIECqAijCyc0Yv6FGq/s320/20230905_172745935_iOS.heic" width="233" /></a></div><br />For the Blurred Boundaries Call I was going after the colors in the Sedona geology. This initial piece captured the colors I wanted. Here I applied thick lines of resist and dye in the spaces in between with a brush in a painterly approach, the dyes running
up to the resist line. Sometimes I blended complimentary colors for an ombre
effect. However, I wanted something with more texture, plus I
needed a variation of values from dark to light.<p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I put the piece back on a frame to add dye (the frame is
shown below as illustration). I learned a dry dye application method from Karen
Sistek a Master Silk Painter. The dry method is possible by first applying a
starch resist (Magic Sizing) in a spray over the entire piece of silk. After the
starch dries, the dye does not penetrate the silk as quickly. Still, a brush of
dye needs to be almost dry and the dye is applied in small brush strokes. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnyrXaB2WB2l4PT_wc5fE1c6o-jv8UPr9O7HVsdlU9ZddM-II98OXuOxRodECABHaQ92mmbQyCLNFABYwOkXBLcDxKpAvaSHNY1iy6x4tDIb_qlEOiOMUJg1i3pUZ8X5mSXg2_cy5HEwNaY_HKxu5n_MvPziZiT48XBJP-m62gtjbSaDU5BuhlhjoAi3GN/s4032/20230928_212821370_iOS.heic" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnyrXaB2WB2l4PT_wc5fE1c6o-jv8UPr9O7HVsdlU9ZddM-II98OXuOxRodECABHaQ92mmbQyCLNFABYwOkXBLcDxKpAvaSHNY1iy6x4tDIb_qlEOiOMUJg1i3pUZ8X5mSXg2_cy5HEwNaY_HKxu5n_MvPziZiT48XBJP-m62gtjbSaDU5BuhlhjoAi3GN/s320/20230928_212821370_iOS.heic" width="320" /></a></div>This iteration shows my rather tentative additions that
carefully used controlled strokes. Not totally satisfied, I allowed the piece

I had the
premixed dyes in the colors I used for the very first iteration. Now the dyes in
the bottles had evaporated into more concentrated colors. I added these to my
palette and randomly mixed the dyes, dipping the same brush into one then the
other! <o:p></o:p><p></p><p class="MsoNormal">I loved the effect, not using the dry brush method, but applying
wet dye over the starched surface. Dyes did not flow, but resulted in a
distressed surface, one that almost looked dirty. Dirty was perfect! I was
simulating rocks after all!</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> I mixed colors on the
fly! No X number of drops of one color or the other! I used the same brush, not
this for olive, this one for purple. It was liberating. The results were
dramatic and interesting! I was mixing methods and mixing dyes with
recklessness and loving the results!<o:p></o:p></p>
