Art/Ecology, an exhibit at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts by Ileana Soto

There is only one week left to catch a juried show, Art/Ecology at the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley, CA. I have one piece in the show called "Heated Boundaries."

Each piece in the show is a visual expression of concern for our environment. The address is 616 Throckmorton Avenue. It's up a winding road situated near trails that thread amongst a creek and redwood forest. Discover this very special place. The exhibit closes March 31st, open 10-2 Tuesdays through Saturdays.

A Photographer Explores Collage in Art Cloth by Kathleen Cunningham

I think like a photographer. I look at my surroundings and then I frame what I see. I've extended this idea to art cloth and have some interesting results. Now I'm looking at giving the images a twist by creating collages in cloth, but collage is a very big idea.

I started to exploring collage techniques by simple, instinctive assembly of objects, photos and fabric to see what fits together by color, shape, scale, and texture. What stories can I tell?

Patterns scaled and covered in net.            Hydrangea with abstract trim.

Trees with added stitching.                                Collaboration with a Painter, in process.

The Collaboration with a Painter is inspired by various collage artists I've been seeing on YouTube and by my experience with the 12 Cycles project. I enjoyed the energy of the collaboration and want to see if these kinds of projects can help with developing the stories I would like to tell. We'll see where that goes.

Caged by Deborah Weir

CAGED is my latest 3D piece.  It refers back to the art quilts I did several years ago on the subject of incarceration.   I came upon a rusty old tomato cage and knew right away that it was crying out to become a piece of art.  I covered it on 2 of its 3 sides with Fosshape to act as a substrate for the textiles and stitching.   To that I applied cheese cloth I'd dyed murky browns.  Then I made warts and knobs and other oddments, mostly hand dyed, that I stitched into place through the open third.  I spray painted the interior when all the stitching was complete.   Getting it to balance was a bit of a trick, but it's very steady now.    It stands just over 2' high.
